amir's bug page
Here you'll find bugs and/or annoyances that I have found in software and
hardware.
- WinXP taskbar: *sometimes* the tooltips for the system tray icons
appear below the taskbar, ie. they are not on top as they should be.
I have not tested this using the default Windows XP taskbar (the blue
stylish one), and I don't suspect that the new one has the problem.
- Windows (legacy) Multimedia API (WinMM): incorrect handling or
decoding of audio that is bassy (instead of true bass sound you get thumping
that sounds trebly--which I call sound artifacts). If you don't believe me,
listen for yourself! file 1,
file 2. Now tell me which one sounds
better. If you listen closely to the bass thumps, you will hear that the
first file sounds awful. Both files are from one MP3 (and no, the encoding
process is not at fault here), and it was played back on two different
players (two different APIs). The WinMM API generated the artifacts (tested
with Windows Media Player 6.4.09.1128), yet when played with the DirectSound
API using WinAMP, there were no sound artifacts to be heard! File 2 is just
a direct copy from the original mp3. To record file 2, I used TotalRecorder
to capture the output of Windows Media Player, which means that it has
nothing to do with my hardware, and has everything to do with the
implementation of the sound output, the API in this case.
