UseNet Service

UNOC Usenet server is closed until further notice! We apologize for any inconvenience.

Our Usenet server, usenet.unoc.net is open for access! You will need to apply for an account. We carry all of the Big 8 groups, as well as some regional and local groups. We carry a significant portion of the alt.* hierarchy. We have just recently started expanding our binary offerings. Look for more news here in the future!

Notice: 20060204 12:00 PDT: Many groups may be unavailable due to recreation of some news spool storage items. This should fix itself within a day or two.

Questions?

  1. Is it really free?
Yes. This may change in the future, depending on how much resources are available for this project.
  2. Can I post?
    No, not at this time.
  3. Is it anonymous?
It will be once posting access is granted to people. Note that we don't normally filter contant (except for SPAM), and we don't add identifying headers such as NNTP-Posting-Host.
  4. Hey, your retention sucks!
We know, but we don't have enough disk space! We have about 12 GB for binaries, and considering that a full newsfeed is more than 4 TB/day, we don't expect to carry everything in the near future. We're gradually improving retention, the first priority being text and BIG-8 groups. Small binary groups can be requested, and we will try to carry those!

Future Plans

  • IPv6
  • encrypted NNTP
  • automated account creation
  • automated newsgroup request processing
  • newsgroup popularity statistics
